Gilgit-Baltistan Committee Gathers to Formulate Policies for Journalists’ Rights
Usman highlights the formation of a working group to address the difficulties faced by journalists in GB.
Gilgit: In a groundbreaking initiative, the inaugural meeting of a committee, specially convened by Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Haji Gulbar Khan, was held to address journalists’ rights and media industry challenges. Chaired by Special Assistant for Information Iman Shah, the meeting brought together key figures, including Secretary Information and Food Usman Ahmed, Additional Secretary Finance Kamal Khan, and representatives from various media organizations.
During the session, Deputy Director of Information Department Shamsur Rahman Qureshi presented proposed recommendations on media legislation, journalist welfare, and efficiency improvements. Special Assistant Iman Shah emphasized the historical significance of establishing a high-level committee dedicated to formulating a comprehensive policy and legislation for the protection of journalists’ rights and resolving industry issues.
Secretary Food and Information Usman Ahmed highlighted the formation of a working group to address the difficulties faced by journalists in Gilgit-Baltistan. The aim is to provide concrete solutions, drawing on the experiences of other provinces in reviewing legislation for media and journalists’ rights.

The meeting delved into the challenges confronted by the media industry, with plans to submit comprehensive recommendations to the committee led by Minister of Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Health Syed Sohail Abbas for final approval in the cabinet. Future committee meetings were also announced, with sessions scheduled in Skardu and Diamar.
