“MLS Embarks on Ambitious Expansion Plan in Lower Divisions Ahead of 2026 World Cup”

Currently MLS’s reserve teams play in MLS Next Pro, which began two years ago

Major League Soccer (MLS) is gearing up for a substantial expansion in the lower divisions of American soccer in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup. The league’s strategy involves targeting cities and towns without professional clubs, aiming to establish a broader presence and engage with new fan bases.

MLS’s current approach includes fielding reserve teams in MLS Next Pro, which operates as the third tier of the game in the United States. However, the league plans to transform some of these second teams into independent clubs based in locations separate from their parent clubs’ home cities.

Charles Altchek, president of MLS Next Pro, expressed the league’s vision to leverage the impact of the upcoming World Cup hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The initiative aims to expand into markets seeking professional soccer, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the sport’s popularity and accessibility.

Nashville SC has set a precedent by relocating its reserve side to Huntsville, Alabama, playing the past season as Huntsville City. According to Altchek, this move has proven highly successful, establishing a robust connection with the local community and fans. The positive outcome serves as a proof of concept, encouraging other clubs to explore similar opportunities.

Altchek emphasized the importance of activating new fan bases and markets by having teams play in different locations. This strategic approach aligns with MLS’s commitment to exploring opportunities and contributing to the growth of professional soccer in diverse regions.

While the top-tier MLS has achieved stability and growth since its inception in 1996, the lower divisions of American soccer have faced challenges. MLS Next Pro is not only attracting reserve teams but also independent clubs with no prior affiliation with the league.

In addition to geographic expansion, MLS Next Pro is considering the possibility of creating a second division league with potential movement between the two divisions—a concept uncommon in the United States, which lacks promotion and relegation systems.

The league’s ambition extends beyond domestic competitions, with discussions underway about international games and collaborative tournaments with Mexico’s Liga MX. MLS’s proactive measures and innovative approaches aim to strengthen the soccer ecosystem, providing fans with increased opportunities to engage with the sport at various levels.
