LONDON: (Sports Desk) – Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Leeds United, while Chelsea produced an emphatic 5-1 win against Bournemouth in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Arsenal bounced back from their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton before the international break, overcoming a second-half deficit to secure all three points at the Emirates Stadium.
Leeds took the lead in the 55th minute when James Justin scored after Arsenal failed to clear Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross. However, Riccardo Calafiori equalised seven minutes later by converting Ben White’s header from close range.
Substitute Bruno Guimaraes completed Arsenal’s comeback, scoring the winner from the edge of the penalty area just six minutes after coming off the bench.
The victory marked Arsenal’s fifth win in six league matches, keeping them second in the standings behind Manchester City on goal difference.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team had been determined to respond positively after the Brighton defeat and rediscover their identity on the pitch.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea ended a run of three consecutive league matches without a win by overwhelming Bournemouth.
Jordan Henderson opened the scoring after just 68 seconds with a curling effort, before Morgan Rogers doubled Chelsea’s advantage in the third minute with a shot that deflected off Bournemouth defender Antonio Silva.
Joao Pedro made it 3-0 shortly after the interval, finishing clinically from Pedro Neto’s pass. Bournemouth pulled one back in the 51st minute through Evanilson, whose effort deflected off Moises Caicedo’s attempted clearance.
Chelsea restored their three-goal advantage when Joao Pedro scored his second of the match in the 67th minute. Henderson then completed the scoring with a powerful free-kick in the 70th minute.
The result took Chelsea’s tally to 23 goals in eight matches across all competitions this season. However, their run without a Premier League clean sheet extended to 22 games.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa’s difficult start to the season continued as they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Brentford.
Yehudi Yarmoliuk gave Brentford an early lead before Nicolas Jackson equalised for Villa 88 seconds later. John McGinn put the hosts ahead in the 77th minute, but Kristoffer Ajer levelled the score two minutes later.
Ipswich Town secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Fulham at Portman Road. Ryan Sessegnon put Fulham ahead in the 55th minute, but Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 88th minute before Dara O’Shea scored a stoppage-time winner.
Brighton strengthened their position in third place with a 2-0 away win over Sunderland despite playing much of the second half with 10 men.
Maxim De Cuyper opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, while Brighton were reduced to 10 players four minutes later following Pascal Struijk’s foul on Wilson Isidor. Jaouen Hadjam sealed the victory in stoppage time.
Manchester United were scheduled to host Tottenham Hotspur later on Saturday in a crucial encounter, with both managers under pressure following disappointing league starts.
United had managed only one victory in their previous five league matches, while Tottenham were also searching for their first win of the season after failing to secure a victory in their opening five top-flight games.
