UNGA Pakistan Iran Meeting: PM Urges Restraint, De-Escalation
PM Shehbaz Sharif and Iran's President Pezeshkian discuss regional peace, the Islamabad MoU, and de-escalation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
New York – (Special Corresondent/Web Desk) – At the UNGA Pakistan Iran meeting in New York on Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sat down with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to talk about peace in the region. Both leaders agreed that calm and dialogue are the only way forward.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Senior officials joined the talks, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and SAPM Tariq Fatemi.
PM Shehbaz spoke about the old friendship between Pakistan and Iran. He said both countries should work harder to build stronger ties in every field that matters to their people.
The prime minister also brought up the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He said Pakistan is ready to keep playing an honest role in helping the region stay peaceful.
President Pezeshkian praised Pakistan’s efforts for peace and stability. He said the bond between the two nations goes deep, built on shared history, culture, and faith. He also said Iran wants to grow this friendship even further.
Both sides agreed to stay in close contact and keep talking regularly about issues that affect the region.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, PM Shehbaz shared some important details. He said the talks with Pezeshkian were detailed and useful. The Iranian president, he added, is still willing to move ahead with the Islamabad agreement.
The prime minister also mentioned the tension near the Bab el-Mandeb strait. He said friendly nations are working together to stop things from getting worse there.
He praised Pakistan’s civil and military leaders for standing together on this issue. He said their joint effort has helped keep diplomacy moving forward.

PM Shehbaz also spoke about terrorism. He said armed groups based in Afghanistan are attacking Pakistan. He made it clear that Pakistan will respond to these attacks with full strength.
This meeting comes at a tense time. Talks between the United States and Iran have been stuck since a war broke out in February. That conflict started after US and Israeli forces struck Iranian targets.

Iran hit back with its own actions, including disrupting ships near the Strait of Hormuz. It also targeted US and Israeli sites nearby. In response, the US blocked ships from reaching Iranian ports.
Pakistan played a key role in stopping the fighting. A ceasefire was announced in April, followed by long talks in Islamabad that lasted 21 hours.
That effort led to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June. PM Shehbaz signed it as mediator, alongside US President Donald Trump and President Pezeshkian.
But in July, both the US and Iran went back to attacking each other. Each side blamed the other for breaking the agreement.
Now, with this new meeting at the UN, both Pakistan and Iran seem ready to keep the door to peace open. Analysts say small steps like this could still lead to bigger progress later.
