SC Accepts Pleas Seeking Suspension of Imaan, Hadi Sentences
ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) -The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted petitions filed by human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband, lawyer Hadi Ali Chattha, seeking suspension of their sentences in a controversial social media posts case and ordered their release.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed heard the petitions.
During the proceedings, Justice Waheed observed that a two-member bench of the apex court was hearing the matter and said the same bench would continue hearing the case.
Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha were sentenced by an Islamabad sessions court in January 2026 to a combined 17 years in prison on multiple charges under cybercrime laws in connection with social media posts.
The case stems from a complaint filed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) in August 2025. According to court records reported by Dawn, the prosecution alleged that Mazari had disseminated material that supported narratives associated with hostile or proscribed groups, while Chattha was implicated in connection with reposting some of her posts.
Following their convictions, the couple challenged the sentences before the Islamabad High Court. The IHC later declared their petitions admissible for hearing, clearing the way for their appeals against the convictions to proceed.
The Supreme Court’s Thursday order provides relief to the couple by suspending their sentences and directing their release while the legal proceedings continue.
