Trump Nominates Wesley Hunt as Saudi Ambassador

WASHINGTON: (News Desk) – US President Donald Trump has nominated Republican Congressman and US Army veteran Wesley Hunt as the next US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, as Washington seeks to strengthen its diplomatic presence in the region amid escalating tensions involving Iran and Yemen.

Hunt’s nomination was submitted to the US Senate on Monday and will require confirmation before he can take up the ambassadorial post.

Hunt said his military and diplomatic experience in the region had given him a clear understanding of the strategic importance of the US-Saudi partnership and the responsibilities attached to the position.

The nomination comes at a sensitive time for Saudi Arabia, a key US ally, following renewed attacks by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen on Saudi territory.

The Houthis, who are fighting the Saudi-backed internationally recognised government in Yemen, reportedly seized control of parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait last week. The strategic waterway has gained further importance amid disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Houthi attacks have also targeted Saudi oil installations, raising concerns over regional energy supplies and pushing oil prices above the $100-per-barrel mark.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had recently asked Trump to order strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, but the US president declined the request, according to Axios.

Hunt’s nomination therefore comes as Washington and Riyadh face growing security challenges across the region, with the new ambassador expected to play a key role in managing the longstanding US-Saudi relationship.
