ISLAMABAD: (Special Reporter) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached the Supreme Court with a contempt petition against the federal government, alleging that its order to transfer party founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad was not implemented.
The petition names Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the federal law minister and the federal information minister as respondents. PTI has requested show-cause notices against those allegedly responsible for violating the court’s directive and has again sought Khan’s transfer to the hospital.
The party has also asked the Supreme Court to appoint a judicial officer to oversee implementation of its order.
Speaking to reporters after filing the petition, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja alleged that the decision not to transfer Khan was deliberate. He rejected claims that security concerns or the presence of PTI supporters prevented the move, saying the apex court’s order had been knowingly disregarded.
The Supreme Court had directed authorities to transfer the incarcerated former prime minister to Shifa International Hospital for a comprehensive medical examination. The court also ordered the formation of a medical board, including an eye specialist, a general physician and Dr Faisal Sultan, with medical tests to be conducted at the hospital.
The directive came amid concerns about Khan’s health, particularly his eyesight. A medical report from Adiala Jail said his right-eye condition had improved after treatment at PIMS, while PTI disputed the assessment and continued to demand treatment under the supervision of his personal doctors.
The court also permitted Khan to meet his family members once a week, while cautioning against any political activity or media engagement related to the meetings or his treatment.
The government had opposed Khan’s transfer to the hospital, citing concerns raised during the proceedings. The Supreme Court subsequently adjourned the broader case until September 16.
PTI has maintained that Khan should receive independent medical care and that the court’s directions must be implemented in full.
