Aimal Wali Khan Urges Trade Revival With India, Neighbouring Nations

Senator urges Pakistan to resume trade with India and Afghanistan, as Senate panel probes customs silver theft and Quetta fire

Aimal Wali Khan – (Staff Reeporter/Web Desk) – Senator Aimal Wali Khan India trade remarks came during a Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat meeting, where he said Pakistan must restore trade with India and Afghanistan should resume legal trade with Iran. His comments came as the committee also reviewed other pressing matters.

The senator said normalizing trade links with neighbouring countries would benefit the region’s economy. He stressed that closed borders and stalled trade routes hurt ordinary traders and consumers on both sides.

During the same session, the committee took up a troubling customs case. A customs officer had reportedly seized 600 kilograms of silver, but after his transfer, 200 kilograms allegedly went missing and was replaced with fake silver.

FIA officials confirmed the accused officer is now in custody. They said records and paperwork bore his signatures, tying him directly to the seizure and its aftermath.

Officials further revealed that 698 kilograms of silver have since been recovered. However, two suspected smugglers managed to flee the country before they could be arrested. An inquiry into the matter has already begun on the Prime Minister’s direct instructions.

The committee also discussed a recent fire at a customs warehouse in Quetta. Officials admitted the exact cause remains unclear, though they confirmed some stored items were highly flammable.

Senator Aimal Wali Khan questioned why such flammable goods were stored close to LPG cylinders and petrol supplies. Customs officials called it a serious lapse and said disciplinary action is underway against those responsible.

Interestingly, the senator pointed out a contradiction between two official reports. One report labeled the fire accidental, while another suggested that petrol had been deliberately sprayed at the site.

He also noted that Balochistan’s Chief Minister had already addressed the officer’s transfer in a press conference. The officer’s family will reportedly be invited to the committee’s next meeting for further clarity.

Separately, the senator raised concerns over the closure of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border. He argued that if KP’s border is being closed over security threats, Balochistan’s border should face the same restrictions, given similar terrorism risks.
