US Accuses China of Using Third Countries to Bypass Tariffs
WASHINGTON: (News Desk) – The White House has accused China of using complex international trade routes to bypass US tariffs, alleging that Chinese goods are being shipped to the United States through more than 40 countries, including India and Israel.
According to the report, the practice could have helped Chinese exporters avoid tariffs worth up to $300 billion. US President Donald Trump also shared the report on social media.
Sources cited in the report said Pakistan was not among the countries identified as transit points for the alleged rerouting of Chinese goods to the United States.
Chinese officials and trade experts, however, rejected the US allegations. They argued that companies shifting production or sourcing across different countries can be a normal feature of global supply chains and should not automatically be considered tariff evasion.
Chinese officials said the key issue is whether companies falsely declared the origin of their products or violated rules governing country of origin.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington said third-party countries and their interests should not be targeted through unilateral measures against transshipped goods.
The spokesperson also criticised tariffs and trade wars, saying they do not create winners. Beijing, the official added, opposes the use of national security arguments and unilateral tariffs to restrict Chinese products and would take necessary measures to protect its interests.
