Punjab Lacks Rules for Private School Fee Determination

Lahore: (Staff Reporter) – The Punjab School Education Department has acknowledged that there is no regulatory framework for determining tuition fees charged by private educational institutions across the province.

During a meeting of the Punjab Assembly Standing Committee on School Education, department officials admitted that while existing laws limit annual fee increases to 4–5%, there is no mechanism to determine or regulate the initial fee structure set by private schools.

Committee members questioned why stronger action is not taken against schools that violate regulations, arguing that the department already has the authority to register private institutions and should also ensure effective oversight.

Members also expressed concern over the high fees charged by many private schools, saying they have placed quality education beyond the reach of low-income families. They called for stricter enforcement of existing rules and urged the government to cancel the registrations of schools found violating the law.
