Doha Agreement Annexes: US Sought Military Base in Afghanistan
Taliban Official Breaks Silence on Doha Agreement Annexes and US Base Demands
Taliban vs US – (Web Desk) – A senior Taliban official has revealed new details about the Doha Agreement annexes, saying American officials pushed to keep a military base in Afghanistan during peace talks. Shahabuddin Delawar, who was part of the Taliban’s negotiating team in Doha, made these remarks at a public meeting in Kabul.
Delawar said former US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad warned that Afghanistan could turn into “another Syria” if American forces left. He claimed Khalilzad argued that powerful figures like General Dostum and Atta Mohammad Noor were kept under US control, and that things could fall apart without American presence.
The Taliban official also said Khalilzad raised fears about Afghanistan breaking apart into smaller pieces after the withdrawal.
On the topic of secret annexes, Delawar pushed back hard. He said the Doha Agreement annexes only covered safe movement arrangements for US troops between Afghan provinces. He denied any hidden or controversial side deals.
Delawar also pointed out that after the Doha Agreement was signed in 2020, the Taliban did not attack a single US soldier. He said his group honoured every commitment made under the deal.
However, it is important to note that while attacks on foreign forces stopped, fighting between the Taliban and Afghan government troops increased sharply after the agreement. Many Afghan security personnel lost their lives during that period.
These comments come as US President Donald Trump has publicly talked about returning to Bagram Air Base, keeping Afghanistan in the global spotlight once again.
