Gilgit-Baltistan’s Development My Top Priority: CM Amjad Hussain Azar

GILGIT: (Web Desk) – The newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on Monday unanimously elected Amjad Hussain Azar as the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after no other candidate filed nomination papers for the position.

The election took place during the inaugural session of the new assembly, where all 30 elected members took oath. The oath-taking ceremony was administered by outgoing Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate.

Amjad Hussain Azar, who secured victory from the GB-1 constituency and serves as the provincial president of the Pakistan Peoples Party, was declared elected unopposed after the nomination deadline passed without any competing candidate.

In other key appointments, PPP lawmaker Imran Nadeem from Shigar was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Assembly, while Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz was chosen unopposed as Deputy Speaker.

Meanwhile, PML-N Gilgit-Baltistan President Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman was officially designated as Leader of the Opposition after a requisition was submitted by opposition members. He was elected from the GB-2 constituency.

Addressing lawmakers after assuming office, Chief Minister Amjad Hussain Azar pledged to prioritize the welfare and development of Gilgit-Baltistan. He described the region as rich in natural resources and vowed to harness its potential to promote economic growth, create employment opportunities, and improve living standards.

The chief minister also expressed gratitude to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for entrusting him with the leadership role and thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for recognizing the PPP’s electoral mandate and extending congratulations, which he said reflected democratic continuity in the region.
