Europe Heatwave Triggers Bans, Cancellations and Health Alerts
Europe – (Web Desk) – A record-breaking Europe heatwave is sweeping across the continent. Governments are taking emergency action as temperatures climb to dangerous levels.
France held its Fete de la Musique festival but banned alcohol in red-alert areas. A record 35 departments were placed on red alert Sunday. By Monday, that number rose to 49, covering nearly half the country.
Paris allowed swimming in the Canal Saint-Martin to help residents cool down. The Louvre canceled a free concert under its glass pyramid.
In Germany, the Berlin Open tennis final was stopped due to severe storms. Temperatures in Berlin crossed 30C over the weekend.
Spain canceled a public World Cup screening in Madrid due to extreme heat. The country declared its first official heatwave of the year, with some areas expected to hit 44C.
Beaches across Spain and Portugal were packed. People walked the streets with fans and umbrellas just to stay cool.
Switzerland warned of highs up to 37C with no clear end in sight. Alerts were issued for lower-altitude regions across the country.
Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia, and Montenegro all braced for orange heat alerts. Temperatures are expected to reach 35C across the Balkans.
Britain issued amber heat warnings from Monday to Thursday. Temperatures in England and Wales could reach 38C.
The Met Office warned of Tropical Nights across southern England, where overnight temperatures will stay above 20C.
Scientists say these back-to-back heatwaves are a direct sign of global warming caused by burning coal, oil, and gas.
