DRAP Bans Substandard Syringes Across Pakistan Markets

Pakistan Cracks Down On Substandard Auto-Disable Syringes Nationwide

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has initiated a nationwide crackdown against substandard auto-disable syringes, declaring 17 batches manufactured by 11 companies as non-compliant with required safety standards.

According to DRAP, the affected 3ml and 5ml auto-disable syringes failed to meet essential functionality requirements, raising serious concerns over patient safety and infection control across healthcare facilities.

The regulator issued formal medical product alerts for all 17 batches and imposed an immediate ban on their sale, distribution, and usage throughout the country.

Laboratory testing conducted by the Central Drug Laboratory (CDL) and the Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) Karachi confirmed that the syringes failed the auto-disable mechanism test, meaning they could potentially be reused due to faulty locking systems.

Health authorities warned that the reuse of defective syringes poses a significant public health risk, including the possible transmission of serious infections such as hepatitis and HIV.

DRAP further reported that three of the non-compliant batches were produced by two Chinese manufacturers, while the remaining affected products originated from companies based in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Provincial health departments and enforcement agencies have been instructed to carry out urgent market inspections to identify and remove the affected batches. Authorities have also ordered the immediate seizure of all remaining stocks found in circulation.

Manufacturers, importers, and distributors have been directed to initiate urgent recalls of the identified syringe batches to prevent further risk to public safety and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
