Vegetable Prices Surge In Lahore Before Eidul Adha

Eid Shopping Becomes Expensive As Food Prices Continue Increasing Rapidly

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – As Eid al-Adha approaches, prices of essential vegetables and green spices have surged sharply across markets in Lahore, creating difficulties for consumers ahead of the festive season.

According to market reports, commonly used kitchen items including onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, lemons, and green chilies are being sold at prices significantly higher than officially notified rates.

Lemons witnessed one of the steepest increases, with the official price fixed at Rs267 per kilogram, while retailers were reportedly selling them for as high as Rs700 per kilogram in several local markets.

Similarly, Chinese garlic, officially priced at Rs380 per kilogram, was being sold at nearly Rs600 per kilogram, while Thai ginger exceeded its official rate of Rs265 and reached up to Rs400 per kilogram.

Onions and tomatoes also recorded price hikes, with onions selling at around Rs90 per kilogram against the official rate of Rs70, while tomatoes were available at Rs60 instead of the notified Rs40 per kilogram.

Green chilies were also being sold above government rates, with market prices touching Rs100 per kilogram despite the official price being Rs85.

Residents expressed frustration over the uncontrolled increase in prices and urged price control magistrates and local authorities to take immediate action against profiteering and overcharging in city markets.

Citizens also demanded stricter monitoring mechanisms to ensure the implementation of official price lists during the Eid shopping season.
