Xi Jinping, Putin Strengthen Strategic Ties Amid Global Tensions

China And Russia Deepen Alliance During Xi Putin Beijing Talks

BEIJING: (Web Desk) – Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised the “unyielding” partnership between China and Russia during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Wednesday, highlighting the strength of their alliance amid shifting global tensions and just days after a high-profile visit by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The meeting in the Great Hall of the People comes at a time when Russia is under heavy Western sanctions due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, increasing its reliance on China as a key buyer of Russian energy exports. Analysts say the visit underscores Moscow’s growing dependence on Beijing as traditional markets remain restricted.

During the talks, Xi said the two countries have “continuously deepened political mutual trust and strategic coordination with resilience that remains unyielding,” according to Chinese state media. Putin, in turn, described bilateral relations as being at an “unprecedentedly high level,” while pointing to external pressures without directly naming Western nations.

Xi also criticized rising “unilateral and hegemonic” actions globally, widely interpreted as a reference to the United States, as both leaders reaffirmed their treaty of “friendly cooperation” and long-term strategic alignment.

Observers say energy cooperation is likely a key focus of the visit, including discussions around the long-delayed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, which would transport Russian natural gas to China via Mongolia and reduce reliance on Middle Eastern supply routes.

The meeting also follows heightened instability in the Middle East, where disruptions in oil and gas flows have created new opportunities for Russia to position itself as an alternative energy supplier. However, China has expressed concern over prolonged conflict, with Xi calling for an immediate ceasefire and warning that continued escalation is “inadvisable.”

Experts note that while Russia seeks to benefit from higher energy prices and shifting global demand, China prioritizes stability in global trade routes, particularly key maritime chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, which are vital to its economy.

Despite shared strategic interests, analysts suggest subtle differences remain between the two powers, even as both leaders present a unified front against Western influence.
