Pressure mounts on Starmer amid Labour unrest

Keir Starmer faces leadership pressure after Labour election losses

LONDON: (Web Desk) – Pressure is mounting on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer after a disappointing performance in local and regional elections, with growing calls from within his own Labour Party for him to resign despite his pledge to remain in office and “prove doubters wrong.”

More than 70 of Labour’s 403 Members of Parliament are reportedly urging him to step down, arguing that the party needs new leadership to rebuild public trust following what they describe as a significant electoral setback. Under party rules, 81 MPs are required to trigger a formal leadership challenge.

Several resignations have come from government aides aligned with senior cabinet figures, with some publicly stating that Starmer has lost the confidence of both the public and party colleagues. Calls for a leadership transition have also been echoed by figures linked to key government departments.

Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide victory in July 2024 ending 14 years of Conservative rule, now faces growing internal divisions. Critics argue that his government has struggled to deliver meaningful economic progress and has been hit by political controversies, including disputes over diplomatic appointments.

Despite these challenges, he has been praised for certain foreign policy positions, including his stance on international issues such as Iran. However, domestically, dissatisfaction has grown amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures and limited visible economic improvement.

The recent elections saw significant gains for opposition parties, including Reform UK and the Greens, while Labour also suffered losses in devolved governments in Wales and Scotland, further intensifying scrutiny of Starmer’s leadership.

In response, Starmer acknowledged public frustration and vowed to deliver more ambitious reforms, promising stronger action on economic growth, energy policy, and international relations, including a tougher reassessment of post-Brexit Britain.

He rejected calls for immediate resignation, warning that leadership instability would repeat the political turmoil seen under previous Conservative governments.

Speculation continues over potential leadership rivals within Labour, though no clear challenger has yet emerged with unified support.
