Petrol Nears Rs400 as Government Raises Fuel Prices, Revises Levy Structure

The government has significantly increased fuel prices while introducing major changes to the petroleum levy system, pushing petrol close to Rs400 per litre and imposing a new tax on high-speed diesel.

Under the revised policy, a fresh levy of Rs28.69 per litre has been applied to high-speed diesel, which was previously exempt from such charges. This move is expected to impact transporters, farmers, and the overall movement of goods across the country.

At the same time, the petroleum levy on petrol has been reduced by Rs3.88 per litre, bringing it down from Rs107.38 to Rs103.50 per litre. Officials confirmed that the updated levy structure will take effect from May 1.

Despite the reduction in petrol levy, fuel prices have surged. Petrol prices have been increased by Rs6.51 per litre, reaching Rs399.86 per litre, while diesel prices have risen more sharply by Rs19.39 per litre, setting the new rate at Rs399.58 per litre.

The combined impact of higher fuel prices and revised levies is expected to fuel inflation, as increased transportation costs are likely to push up the prices of essential goods across the country.
