Iran to play World Cup says Rubio
Marco Rubio confirms Iran World Cup participation amid speculation
WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Iran’s national football team will be allowed to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, distancing the US government from speculation that another country could replace them.
Speaking at the White House, Rubio clarified that the United States has not barred Iran’s footballers from entering the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
However, he noted that while players would be permitted entry, certain members of the Iranian delegation could face restrictions if they are found to have links with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which Washington designates as a terrorist organization.
Rubio’s comments came after reports of a proposal suggesting that Italy could replace Iran in the tournament, an idea reportedly floated by US special envoy Paolo Zampolli and quickly dismissed by Italian officials.
Only one approved under Trump gold card visa
Italy’s sports authorities strongly rejected the suggestion, stating that World Cup qualification must be earned on the field. The Iranian embassy in Rome also criticized the proposal, calling it politically motivated.
Despite concerns linked to regional tensions and the Iran-US conflict, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated that Iran remains qualified and will participate in the tournament based on official draw procedures.
The debate comes amid ongoing geopolitical friction following the Iran-US-Israel conflict earlier this year, which has raised broader questions about international participation and security arrangements for global sporting events.
