ECP disqualifies PTI’s Murad Saeed as Senator over May 9 conviction
Subtitle: Murad Saeed Loses Senate Seat After 10 Year Prison Sentence in May 9 Violence Case
PTI Senator Murad Saeed – (Web Desk) – The Election Commission of Pakistan has disqualified PTI Senator Murad Saeed. The reason is his conviction in a May 9 case. The case goes back to the violent protests of 2023.
An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi gave him a 10 year prison sentence. Because of this the ECP removed him under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution. His Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is now empty.
Saeed won the Senate seat in July 2025. But he never took the oath. He was hiding at the time and never showed up.
Back in February he wrote a resignation letter to the PTI chairman. He said the parliament was built on illegitimacy. He felt it had turned against the people. So he resigned as a protest.
The May 9 protests started when Imran Khan was arrested from outside the Islamabad High Court. Angry supporters took to the streets. They attacked government buildings and military sites. One of them was the Corps Commander House in Lahore known as Jinnah House.
Many PTI workers were arrested after those events. Some got bail. Others are still in jail.
Imran Khan himself has been in prison since August 2023. He was removed as prime minister in April 2022 through a no confidence vote. Since then he has faced many charges including corruption and terrorism.
