Ship Targeted by Unknown Projectile in Strait of Hormuz

Malta-flagged container ship hit in Strait of Hormuz amid rising Gulf tensions, sparking fire and international safety concerns.

Strait of Hormuz Near Oman – (Web Desk)- A Malta-flagged container ship was attacked on Wednesday while passing through the Strait of Hormuz near Oman, maritime security agencies reported, as tensions in the Gulf rise amid Iran’s ongoing retaliation campaign.

The vessel, sailing eastbound about two nautical miles off Oman’s coast, was hit by an “unknown projectile” just above the waterline, causing a fire in its engine room, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

Private security firm Vanguard Tech identified the ship as the Safeen Prestige, flying the Maltese flag. Tracking data from Marine Traffic shows the vessel had left the UAE’s Ghantoot port and was headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, when the incident occurred.

This was the fourth reported attack in the region within 24 hours, following projectiles striking or landing near three other ships off the coasts of the UAE and Oman.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated they had “complete control” over the strategic waterway, through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s seaborne oil passes, warning that vessels attempting to transit could face missile or drone threats.
