Pakistan steps up diplomacy to prevent Iran-Saudi tensions from escalating, urging dialogue as Middle East conflict intensifies after US-Israel strikes.
Pakistan – KSA – (Web Desk) – Pakistan is actively engaging with Iran to prevent any attacks on Saudi Arabia, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday, as tensions rise in the Middle East after joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets.
Speaking on Geo News programme Geo Pakistan, Sanaullah shared that Pakistan’s military leadership informed lawmakers during an in-camera briefing that they are in continuous contact with Iranian officials. He said efforts are being made to clear misunderstandings and to ensure that Gulf countries are not drawn into the conflict.
The closed-door meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, brought together leaders of parliamentary and political parties. Participants were briefed on the Pakistan-Afghanistan situation, the evolving Middle East crisis, and Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
According to Sanaullah, attendees expressed support for Iran’s right to respond to Israel. However, there was a clear consensus that any retaliation should not target Gulf nations.
He also noted that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar updated the participants on his recent contacts with several countries, particularly Gulf states, aimed at reducing tensions and promoting regional stability.
According to Sanaullah, Dar conveyed that Iran had stated it would not carry out attacks against Saudi Arabia if Riyadh guaranteed that its territory would not be used against Tehran.
Citing Dar, he said that Pakistan’s exchanges with Iran and other countries were “quite positive”, emphasizing that Pakistan was facilitating communication between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
He noted that Pakistan’s military and political leadership had previously played a key role in the previous negotiations concerning Iran.
Describing the situation in the Middle East, Sanaullah said a war had been imposed on Iran and Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts were aimed at reaching an agreement to bring the conflict to an end.
The US may have assumed Iran would retreat after an initial major strike and accept all conditions unilaterally, he said, warning that the war in the region could be prolonged.
Since the beginning of the US-Israel assault on Iran on February 28, more than 1,000 people have been killed across the country, IRNA reported on Wednesday.
