WhatsApp Hacking Cases Surge Across Pakistan
Personal Data Breaches and WhatsApp Hacks Rise Sharply in Pakistan
Islamabad (Web Desk) – Pakistan is witnessing a sharp rise in personal data breaches and WhatsApp hacking incidents, according to documents released by the National Cyber Crime and Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
The agency reported receiving 157,465 complaints over the past year, including 2,974 cases specifically related to WhatsApp hacking and misuse. Investigations were launched in just 1,032 instances, and only one arrest has been made despite the scale of the problem.
The probe identified 35 websites directly involved in the misuse of Pakistani citizens’ personal data, alongside 52 social media platforms found complicit in illegal activities. Fraudsters are increasingly using sophisticated techniques, such as phishing calls and messages to trick users into revealing verification codes, or issuing duplicate SIM cards without consent to hijack WhatsApp accounts.

Victims are also targeted through malicious software disguised as job offers or prize notifications, allowing hackers full access to devices. Once accounts are compromised, perpetrators often demand money from the victims and use the accounts to commit financial fraud, blackmail, and activities that damage personal reputations.
The report underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity awareness and stronger measures to protect citizens’ personal data in Pakistan.
