Dhaka (Web Desk)- Following its two-thirds majority victory in recent elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced it will formally demand the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India.
Salahuddin Ahmed, speaking to journalists outside the BNP’s Dhaka office, said the party will press for Hasina to appear before the courts in accordance with the law.
He emphasized that the matter should be resolved through the foreign ministries of Bangladesh and India, adding that the BNP will formally request the Indian government to return the former prime minister so she can face charges related to crimes against humanity.
The BNP leadership stated that demanding Hasina’s extradition is necessary to uphold Bangladesh’s legal and judicial system and stressed that the move will comply with international law.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina, currently in India, has labeled Bangladesh’s elections as a “drama,” while the BNP made it clear that it will not make any concessions on the matter.

It is noteworthy that Sheikh Hasina fled to India following public uprisings against her government in August 2024. In November of last year, a Dhaka court sentenced her to death in a case involving crimes against humanity.
