India, Malaysia Strengthen Semiconductor and Technology Partnership
India and Malaysia Deepen Trade, Semiconductor Ties
PUTRAJAYA (Web Desk) — India and Malaysia on Sunday agreed to strengthen cooperation in the semiconductor sector as the two Indian Ocean neighbours moved to expand trade, technology, and security ties during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit.
Modi arrived in Malaysia on Saturday for his first visit in more than a decade and held talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The two leaders signed multiple agreements covering renewable energy, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
“Along with AI and digital technologies, we will advance our partnership in semiconductors, health, and food security,” Modi said at a joint news conference. Anwar described the talks as “strategic and critical” for further enhancing bilateral relations.

Malaysia is a major global player in the semiconductor industry, ranking sixth in worldwide exports, with the sector contributing about 25 percent of the country’s GDP. India’s foreign ministry noted Malaysia’s decades-long experience and a strong semiconductor ecosystem, adding that Indian companies are keen to collaborate in research, development, manufacturing, and testing facilities.
Trade between the two countries has also grown steadily. India exported goods worth $7.32 billion to Malaysia last year, while imports stood at $12.54 billion. Modi also highlighted the role of Malaysia’s nearly three million-strong Indian-origin community, calling it a “living bridge” that strengthens people-to-people ties between the two nations.
