Karachi Begins Citywide Polio Drive With International Support

KARACHI: (Web Desk) – A seven-day polio vaccination campaign in Karachi begins today, Monday, February 2, and will continue until February 8, 24NewsHD reported. The city administration, in coordination with the health department and international organizations, has finalized arrangements to ensure smooth execution of the drive.

Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, chaired a meeting with Deputy Commissioners, health officials, and EOC representatives to review preparations. EOC Coordinator Shehryar Gull Memon and Task Force Coordinator Saud Yaqoob briefed the Commissioner on the campaign, noting that it will receive support from international partners.

The drive aims to vaccinate over 2.1 million children, with 22,000 polio workers, 2,700 area in-charges, and 267 UC medical officers deployed for the campaign. Additional Inspector-General of Police Azad Khan announced that 7,703 security personnel, including women, will be assigned to protect polio teams across the city—2,724 in the West Zone and 2,908 in the South Zone. Strict security protocols have been issued to DIGs of all zones to ensure the safety of vaccination teams.

Commissioner Naqvi emphasized that the campaign is being conducted with the support of the EOC, the health department, WHO, the Gates Foundation, Rotary, and UNICEF, aiming for full coverage and the complete eradication of polio in the city.
