Court Sentences PTI Leaders to 10 Years in May 9 Cases
ISLAMABAD — The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore has sentenced PTI leaders, including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Umar Sarfaraz Cheema, and Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, to 10 years in prison in connection with the May 9, 2023, violence in Lahore. The cases involved the burning of a police vehicle at Kalma Chowk and setting a container on fire in Gulberg.
The verdicts were announced by ATC Judge Arshad Javed at Kot Lakhpat Jail under case numbers 1078/23 (Naseerabad Police Station) and 1280/23 (Gulberg Police Station). PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s challans in both cases were not submitted by the prosecution.

A total of 78 witnesses were presented by the prosecution. In the Gulberg vehicle-burning case, challans of 33 accused were submitted, with four declared absconders due to prolonged absence. In the Kalma Chowk container-burning case, challans of 36 accused were submitted, while 12, including Hammad Azhar, Murad Saeed, Zubair Niazi, and Mian Aslam Iqbal, were declared absconders.
Out of 14 cases related to the May 9 Lahore attacks, seven have now been decided. The prosecution claimed that PTI leaders had incited workers to revolt and riot during the incidents.
