FM Ishaq Dar addresses fresh IWT violations by India

Pakistan has formally raised concerns over unusual fluctuations in river flows with India through diplomatic and legal channels, including the office of the Indus Water Commissioner, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Friday.

Dar said that significant variations in water flows were recorded twice this year, particularly in the Chenab River. He noted that sharp fluctuations were observed between April 30 and May 21, and again from December 7 to 15, 2025, calling the changes unusual and a matter of serious concern for Pakistan.

The foreign minister alleged that India continues to construct illegal dams, accusing New Delhi of actions that undermine the spirit and provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty. He said Pakistan has documented these developments and pursued the matter through appropriate forums.

Dar stressed that India must fulfil its obligations under the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that any attempt to alter natural river flows could have serious consequences downstream. He further alleged that India was systematically attempting to weaken the treaty, which governs the sharing of river waters between the two countries.

Pakistan, he said, remains committed to protecting its water rights through established legal and diplomatic mechanisms.
