Case Filed Against Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for Allegedly Removing Woman’s Hijab
The incident has sparked widespread controversy and calls for accountability.
Patna – A legal case has been registered against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an ally of the ruling BJP, over allegations that he forcibly removed the veil of a Muslim woman doctor during a public event.
The case was filed by Samia Rana, a Samajwadi Party leader from Lucknow, following the circulation of a video showing Kumar pulling down Nusrat Parveen’s hijab during a government function. The incident has sparked widespread controversy and calls for accountability.
Aakar Patel, Chair of the Board at Amnesty International India, condemned the act, saying it was “an assault on this woman’s dignity, autonomy, and identity.” He added that forcibly removing a hijab sends a dangerous message, normalizing discrimination and eroding freedom of religion.

In the video, Nitish Kumar can be seen gesturing toward Nusrat Parveen’s headscarf before pulling it down. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary intervenes to restrain him, while Health Minister Mangal Pandey and the Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Deepak Kumar appear to laugh at the incident.
The case has drawn national attention, raising questions about respect for religious freedoms and women’s rights in public spaces. Authorities are yet to comment on further legal proceedings.
