Nadal Jokes About Missing Australian Open As Federer Returns

“Looks like I won’t be able to play the Australian Open 2026,” Nadal wrote

ISLAMABAD: Rafael Nadal has shared a light-hearted update on his fitness, joking that he will miss the Australian Open 2026, shortly after Roger Federer’s return to Melbourne Park was confirmed.

Federer, who retired after the 2022 Laver Cup, is set to feature in the Australian Open’s inaugural opening ceremony next month. The six-time Australian Open champion will take part in an exhibition titled Battle of the World No. 1s alongside Andre Agassi, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.

Speaking about his return, Federer said the Australian Open holds some of the most memorable moments of his career, including his emotional comeback title in 2017 and successful defence in 2018. He added that he is excited to return to Rod Laver Arena and reconnect with Australian fans.

Meanwhile, Nadal posted a photo on Instagram showing his right hand in a brace following surgery, humorously suggesting he would not be able to play the Australian Open in 2026.

“Looks like I won’t be able to play the Australian Open 2026,” Nadal wrote, adding that the surgery was needed to address a long-standing issue and that he hopes to recover fully.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion officially retired from professional tennis at the 2024 Davis Cup and remains one of the most successful players in Australian Open history, having won the title twice.
