Israeli Airstrike Kills Five Al Jazeera Journalists in Gaza City

Global outrage as Israeli airstrike kills Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, sparking press freedom concerns.

Gaza-Isreal – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – A prominent Al Jazeera journalist, Anas Al Sharif, was killed along with four of his colleagues in an Israeli airstrike on Sunday in Gaza City. The attack took place near Shifa Hospital, where the group was working inside a media tent. Two other people were also killed in the strike, according to hospital officials. Al Jazeera called Al Sharif “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists” and said the attack was a “deliberate attempt to silence voices” as Israel prepares for further action in Gaza. The other journalists killed were Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal, along with a team assistant. Al Sharif, 28, had previously worked with a Reuters team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2024. He had denied Israeli claims that he was linked to Hamas, and press freedom groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), said Israel failed to provide credible evidence. United Nations experts had also warned that his life was in danger due to his reporting from Gaza.

Before his death, Al Sharif left a message saying he never hesitated to “convey the truth without distortion or misrepresentation.” Just minutes before the attack, he posted online about heavy Israeli bombardment in Gaza City. Israel’s military said it targeted him because he allegedly led a Hamas cell involved in rocket attacks, a claim Al Jazeera and journalists’ groups strongly rejected. CPJ said Israel’s repeated labeling of journalists as militants without proof raises serious questions about press freedom. The Gaza government media office says 237 journalists have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023, making this conflict the deadliest ever for media workers. The incident has drawn global condemnation and renewed calls for the protection of journalists in conflict zones, with many warning that silencing the press is an attack on truth itself.
