Shaheen’s Roar, Hassan’s Magic — West Indies Fall to Their Knees

By: Abdul Ghaffar Khan

At the historic Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, Pakistan’s Shaheens made a flying start to the series by defeating the West Indies by five wickets in their very first ODI. This victory was more than just two points on the scoreboard — it was a statement of intent, strategy, and a solid foundation for the future.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the West Indies initially seemed to have made the right call. However, Shaheen Shah Afridi’s pace and swing rattled the hosts’ confidence early on. From the other end, Naseem Shah maintained relentless pressure with disciplined line and length. Evin Lewis (60), Shai Hope (55), and Roston Chase (53) offered resistance, but the loss of wickets at regular intervals broke their momentum. Eventually, the home side was bowled out for 280 runs. Shaheen took four wickets, Naseem claimed three, while Salman Ali Agha used his spin effectively to stem the flow of runs.

Pakistan’s chase began cautiously, but the defining moment came from young debutant Hassan Nawaz, who scored an unbeaten 63. His 104-run partnership with Hussain Talat laid the platform for victory. Both batsmen used their feet well against the spinners, kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and doubles, and, in the closing stages, Hassan’s aggressive stroke play left the West Indian bowlers helpless.

Under captain Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s strategy was clear: preserve wickets early, build partnerships in the middle overs, and attack in the final phase. Discipline was evident in both bowling and fielding, with only a few minor lapses.

From a tactical standpoint, the West Indies’ biggest weaknesses were the irresponsible approach of their middle order and their sloppy fielding. Dropping two simple catches and missing a run-out opportunity proved costly. If these mistakes continue, a comeback in the series will be extremely difficult for them.

For the next match, Pakistan will need to improve their top-order performance, as losing wickets early can be costly in major tournaments. Maintaining 100% focus in the field and adopting a more aggressive bowling approach during the middle overs will also be beneficial.

This win sends a clear message — Pakistan’s young guns have the temperament to handle pressure in big matches. If the same passion and game plan continue, this series could become more than just a win — it could be a bold statement to the cricketing world that Pakistan has the strength to defeat any opponent.
