Harry Brook Tops ICC Test Rankings as Gill, Smith Make Major Gains

India’s Shubman Gill continues to lead the ODI batting rankings, with Pakistan’s Babar Azam holding firm at the No. 2 spot.

LONDON — England’s Harry Brook has climbed to the summit of the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, overtaking teammate Joe Root following a commanding display in the second Test against India at Edgbaston.

Brook’s exceptional knock of 158 in the first innings helped him move ahead of Root, who now trails by 18 rating points. The 25-year-old’s timely return to form proved crucial in helping England level the series 1-1 in Birmingham.

India’s Shubman Gill also made headlines in the latest ICC rankings update released on Wednesday. The Indian skipper surged 15 places to a career-best sixth position after amassing scores of 269 and 161 in the same match — his first Test victory since becoming India’s full-time captain. Gill now sits just 79 rating points behind Brook, with Root, Kane Williamson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Steve Smith occupying the other spots in the top five.

England’s Jamie Smith, the young wicketkeeper-batter, broke into the top 10 Test batters for the first time. His unbeaten 184 and 88 in the second Test lifted him 16 places to secure the 10th position in the rankings.

Bowlers Rankings: Bumrah Holds Top Spot, Siraj Moves Up

On the bowling front, India’s Jasprit Bumrah retained his position as the No. 1 Test bowler, despite sitting out the Edgbaston match due to workload management. His pace partner Mohammed Siraj impressed with the ball and rose six places to 22nd in the latest rankings.

West Indies pacers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph also made gains, each moving up six spots to 29th and 31st, respectively.

Pakistan’s Noman Ali remains the only bowler from the country ranked among the top 10 in the ICC Test rankings, underscoring a need for more consistent performances from Pakistan’s bowling unit on the international stage.

ODI Rankings: Asalanka, Mendis Make Strides

In the ODI format, Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka moved up two spots to sixth among batters after playing a pivotal role in his team’s 2-1 series victory over Bangladesh. His teammate Kusal Mendis, who was named Player of the Series, saw a significant leap, rising 10 places to reach 10th position.
