World Muslim Congress Calls for Urgent Action on Kashmir at UN Human Rights Council

“For decades, the Kashmiri people have endured systemic injustices, repression, and a denial of their fundamental rights,” stated Wani.

Geneva – Addressing the 59th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council today, Altaf Hussain Wani, Representative of the World Muslim Congress (WMC), delivered a powerful statement under agenda item 3, during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on International Solidarity. Wani implored the Special Rapporteur to prioritize a thorough investigation into the ongoing human rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK).
“For decades, the Kashmiri people have endured systemic injustices, repression, and a denial of their fundamental rights,” stated Wani. “India’s assertion that the Kashmir issue is an internal matter is demonstrably false. This is fundamentally a matter of the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have endured decades of occupation.”
The WMC representative emphasized that genuine stability in the region cannot be achieved through the suppression of fundamental human rights, despite recent calls for stability. He urged the international community to move beyond expressions of concern and take concrete action to address the dire situation.
Key demands outlined in the statement include:
•A Commission of Inquiry: The WMC called on the UN Human Rights Council to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate abuses in IOJK and ensure accountability for perpetrators.
•Unimpeded Humanitarian Access:  The organization demanded unimpeded access for humanitarian organizations to provide essential healthcare, education, and livelihood support to the Kashmiri people.
•Prioritization by the Special Rapporteur:  Wani stressed that the Special Rapporteur on International Solidarity’s attention to the situation is “not merely desired; it is a moral imperative.”
“The time for complacency is over,” Wani concluded. “The Kashmiri people deserve justice, dignity, and the opportunity to determine their own future. Let us uphold the principles of international solidarity and stand with them in their hour.
