British High Commissioner Jane Marriott Meets Speaker National Assembly in Islamabad

Islamabad: Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has emphasized the importance of enhanced parliamentary cooperation in advancing bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Speaking during a meeting with British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ms. Jane Marriott, at the Parliament House, the Speaker said Pakistan deeply values its historic relationship with the UK, and that stronger inter-parliamentary engagement is vital for mutual progress.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said that Parliament has undergone significant modernization efforts, including becoming the world’s first fully solar-powered “Green Parliament.” He shared that over 60,000 applications were received for the National Assembly’s three-month Parliamentary Internship Programme, with more than 200 interns selected through a merit-based and inclusive process ensuring minority and gender representation.

The Speaker noted that he had personally interviewed the entire National Assembly staff—over 1,400 individuals—to improve resource management and address employee welfare. Training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has also been initiated for the staff. “While AI has its challenges, its potential for good governance is immense,” he stated.

Discussing legislative improvements, he said the Legislative Council, established in 2014, has strengthened the role of parliamentary committees. Technical staff now support committee functions, and even Private Members’ Bills are being referred for thorough scrutiny. He also revealed that, for the first time, the Finance Committee of the National Assembly is actively reviewing the federal budget 2025–26, reflecting improved institutional oversight.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq pointed to population growth and socio-economic disparities as major national challenges requiring coordinated policy action. He briefed the High Commissioner on the successful 18th Speakers’ Conference and the creation of the Association of Public Accounts Committees (PACs), a milestone to enhance cooperation between federal and provincial legislatures.

On regional peace, the Speaker reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace and restraint, especially in the wake of its recent victory in the war with India. He stressed that global peace must remain a priority, as common citizens suffer the most during conflicts.

High Commissioner Jane Marriott praised the Speaker’s inclusive leadership and consultative legislative approach, especially his efforts to ensure participation from across the political spectrum. She lauded Pakistan’s sustainability initiatives and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in areas including education, climate resilience, and social development.
