Mohammad Nabi Aims to Extend Afghanistan Journey Beyond Champions Trophy
ISLAMABAD: Mohammad Nabi, a stalwart of Afghanistan’s cricket team, is considering extending his international career beyond the 2025 ICC Men’s Champions Trophy. At 40, Nabi is the only remaining player from Afghanistan’s first-ever One-Day International (ODI) squad and continues to be an elite all-rounder. Despite his age, he remains a key player for his team and recently led Fortune Barishal to victory in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Reflecting on his career and the future, Nabi mentioned, “I’m still thinking about my future in international cricket. The Champions Trophy might not be my last ODI. While I plan to reduce the number of ODIs I play, I want to give opportunities to younger players to gain experience.”
Having been part of Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI victory against Scotland in 2009, Nabi has been a pillar of Afghanistan cricket. His participation in the BPL, where he helped his team secure the title, has further boosted his confidence as he prepares for the Champions Trophy. Nabi is in good physical shape after intense sessions with the Afghanistan national team in Abu Dhabi.
In Afghanistan’s upcoming Champions Trophy campaign, Nabi will play a crucial role alongside fellow spinners, including Rashid Khan, who is ranked as the world’s top ODI bowler. Nabi also praised 20-year-old left-arm spinner Nangialai Kharoti, who recently impressed in Sharjah and was included in the squad. Nabi expressed hope that Kharoti’s performance will add strength to Afghanistan’s bowling attack.

Nabi also shared his admiration for Rashid Khan, who recently became the most prolific wicket-taker in T20I history, surpassing Dwayne Bravo. Nabi acknowledged Rashid’s leadership both on and off the field, highlighting his ability to inspire young players and create a positive atmosphere in the team.
Afghanistan will face tough competition in the Champions Trophy, with Australia, South Africa, and England in their group. They are coming off a strong performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where they reached the semi-finals. Nabi, however, also has personal ambitions, with hopes of sharing the field with his son, 18-year-old Hassan Eisakhil, who has been making waves in domestic cricket. Nabi expressed his desire to play alongside his son, stating, “It’s my dream to play together for Afghanistan. He’s working hard, and I’m pushing him to set his own goals.”
With a bright future ahead for both Nabi and Afghanistan cricket, the 2025 Champions Trophy could mark another milestone in the career of this experienced all-rounder.
