Pakistan Recalls Ambassador to Washington for Critical Consultations Amid US Sanctions Pressure

US Sanctions on Pakistan's Missile Program: Key Diplomatic Consultations Ahead of 2025 Visit

Islamabad: In a move signaling heightened diplomatic activity, Pakistan has recalled its ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, for urgent consultations regarding the growing US pressure and potential sanctions on the country’s missile program. The decision comes as Pakistan prepares to address these concerns in the wake of the anticipated transition to a Republican-led US administration in January 2025.

Ambassador Sheikh arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday to meet with senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, key members of the Foreign Office, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The consultations are focused on formulating strategies to counter the expected sanctions and pressure, particularly in light of Pakistan’s missile development program, which has been a point of contention with the US in recent years.

Over the past several months, Ambassador Sheikh has held numerous discussions with members of the US Congress to present Pakistan’s position on the issue. He is expected to brief Prime Minister Sharif and the Foreign Office on the latest developments and challenges in Washington.

Diplomatic sources revealed that since 2021, the US has imposed six rounds of sanctions targeting entities and individuals linked to Pakistan’s missile program. With US officials likely to visit Pakistan in early 2025, these consultations are crucial in shaping Pakistan’s response to the evolving diplomatic landscape.

As Pakistan navigates these challenges, the country remains committed to protecting its national security while engaging in dialogue to address the concerns of its international partners.
