Imran Khan Sets Conditions for Talks, Demands Prisoner Release

Khan outlined two key demands for meaningful negotiations with the government.

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan held an important discussion with lawyers, emphasizing his stance on negotiations with the government. He acknowledged the efforts of the party’s negotiating committee but stressed the importance of meeting with his appointed team to ensure he is fully informed about the negotiations. He named Sayed Hamid Raza as the spokesperson for PTI’s negotiation process.

Khan outlined two key demands for meaningful negotiations with the government:

  1. The release of under-trial political prisoners.
  2. The establishment of a judicial commission consisting of senior judges to investigate the incidents of May 9 and November 26.

He warned that if these demands were met, the PTI would delay its civil disobedience movement. However, he expressed concern that the government might attempt to ignore the inquiry into the May 9 and November 26 events, a move he vowed to oppose.

Khan also rejected the unconstitutional decisions made by military courts, stating that such decisions were tarnishing Pakistan’s international reputation and could lead to economic sanctions. He emphasized that these actions were a blow to the credibility of the “constitutional bench.”

Furthermore, Khan criticized the current political situation, claiming that political engineering was taking place in Pakistan. He argued that PTI was being suppressed, which he believed was undermining democracy, judicial independence, and the rule of law.

He also addressed the issue of foreign and domestic investment in Pakistan, stating that no country can prosper without investment. He pointed out that people were transferring their capital abroad due to the lack of an independent judiciary and respect for the rule of law in Pakistan. Khan highlighted that, following the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the judiciary had been completely weakened, and the formation and decisions of the constitutional bench had been an embarrassment to the Supreme Court.
