86 stranded Pakistanis in Syria reach Beirut, Cabinet informed
ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, 86 Pakistanis stranded in Syria have successfully reached Beirut, Lebanon, following the ongoing efforts to evacuate citizens from the war-torn region. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a federal cabinet meeting on Tuesday, where he was briefed on the progress of the evacuation.
The cabinet was informed that 79 of the 250 Pakistani pilgrims stranded in Syria had already made it to Beirut, alongside seven teachers from a group of nearly 20 Pakistani students and educators. Efforts to repatriate these citizens to Pakistan are underway, with embassy officials working tirelessly to ensure their safe return.
Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of all Pakistanis abroad, especially in difficult circumstances. “Arrangements are being finalized for the safe return of these citizens,” a statement from the cabinet meeting said, with a special flight from Beirut to Pakistan expected within the next 48 hours. The Civil Aviation Authority has been instructed to facilitate the special flight for these stranded Pakistanis.
In addition to the evacuation update, the cabinet also approved several key administrative and energy-related measures. These included settlement agreements with eight independent power plants (IPPs) operating on bagasse, aimed at reducing electricity prices and boosting private sector participation to support economic growth. Furthermore, the cabinet approved the appointment of Brigadier Asim Bashir Warraich as Member Production Control at the Heavy Industry Taxila Board and endorsed the creation of the National Commission on the Status of Women Fund.
