Govt postpones Hajj 2025 lucky draw; Here’s why?

ISLAMABAD: In response to a lower-than-expected number of Hajj applications, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has decided to extend the deadline for submission and postpone the Hajj lucky draw.

Ministry sources have revealed that the deadline for submitting Hajj applications under the government scheme will be extended by 13 days. The lucky draw, initially scheduled for December 6, will now take place on December 19.

So far, approximately 55,000 applications have been submitted under the government Hajj scheme. The ministry hopes the extension will encourage more people to apply for the pilgrimage.

The final announcement regarding the extended deadline and revised draw date is expected to be made tomorrow.

In an effort to facilitate the process, the State Bank of Pakistan recently directed designated banks to remain open on Saturdays and Sundays until 2:30 PM to ensure the smooth submission of applications before the initial deadline of December 3.

Earlier this year, the government also announced a significant reduction in Hajj airfares for 2025. Under the revised fares, each of the 89,605 pilgrims will now pay Rs220,000 for air travel, a reduction of Rs14,000 compared to last year’s fare of Rs234,000. This reduction is expected to save pilgrims a total of Rs1.24 billion.

The fare cut follows negotiations between Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with PIA lowering its prices for the second consecutive year. The fare reduction will also apply to other airlines, including Saudi Arabia’s national carrier. A deal with other private Pakistani airlines is expected to be finalized soon.

The division of travel arrangements will see 40% of pilgrims flying with PIA, 40% with Saudi Airlines, and the remaining 20% with private Pakistani airlines.
