India and China Reach Agreement on New Patrolling Plan Along LAC
Breakthrough in Himalayan border tensions ahead of Modi-Xi BRICS summit meeting.
Webdesk: In a notable diplomatic development, India and China have reached a new agreement on patrolling protocols along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Himalayas. The deal, aimed at easing tensions that have simmered since the clashes between the two nations in May 2020, is expected to lead to disengagement in the disputed areas.
The agreement focuses on patrolling arrangements in the Depsang and Demchok regions, which have been major points of contention. While an official statement has yet to be issued, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri hinted that this consensus could be a key step toward formally resolving the prolonged border standoff.
This breakthrough comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS summit, where a bilateral meeting between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines could further solidify efforts to restore peace and stability along the LAC—a crucial factor in normalizing relations between the two neighboring powers.
Both nations have been engaged in talks to settle their border issues, with the latest round of discussions taking place on August 29 in Beijing. Diplomatic efforts remain focused on de-escalating tensions and finding mutually agreeable solutions.
