Encroachment Removal Initiative Launched Across Karachi

The Sindh government, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Corporation Karachi (KMC), has launched a citywide operation aimed at reclaiming public spaces.

This decision follows a meeting between Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, where it was resolved to grant Assistant Commissioners greater authority to combat encroachments more effectively.

A key focus of this initiative is the removal of encroachments around hospitals to ensure that access to healthcare services is not obstructed. Mayor Wahab emphasized the government’s commitment to the cause, stating, “Firm actions will be taken to clear encroachments throughout the city.”

Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah reiterated the government’s determination, noting that removing encroachments is part of a larger urban management reform agenda. “We will rid the city of encroachments,” Shah said, underscoring efforts to restore Karachi’s infrastructure and reclaim public spaces.

As part of the broader urban renewal project, the Sindh Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs. 1.5 billion to repair roads damaged by encroachments. Mayor Wahab also announced plans for substantial upgrades to the city’s drainage system.

Additionally, the initiative includes modernization efforts for Karachi’s public transport system, with the KMC bus system set to be improved. Chief Secretary Shah confirmed that the government is committed to enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure. Furthermore, the pensions of KMC employees will be addressed as part of efforts to streamline municipal services.
