PTI Arrests Lead to Suspension of Top National Assembly Security Personnel

Islamabad-National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has taken decisive action by suspending several key security personnel in the Parliament House due to their negligence. This includes a four-month suspension for Sergeant-at-Arms Ashfaq Ashraf, who has been criticized for failing to adequately secure the Parliament House.

Additionally, four other security staff members have also been suspended for not adhering to the established security protocols. The suspended individuals are a security assistant and three junior assistants: Waqas Ahmed, Obaidullah, Waheed Safdar, and Muhammad Haroon.

Ironically, the now-suspended Sergeant-at-Arms Ashfaq Ashraf was appointed to lead this committee.

According to sources, the committee was tasked with conducting a thorough review of the incidents that led to the arrests. Sources indicate that the committee was ordered to compile and present a detailed report on merit to the speaker, outlining the findings and suggesting appropriate actions.

The speaker issued clear directives to the committee, emphasizing the importance of identifying any individuals involved in activities outside the Parliament House that could undermine its dignity. He instructed the committee to gather all available evidence, including CCTV footage from within the House.

“The dignity of parliament is paramount, and anyone responsible for compromising it will face severe consequences,” Speaker Sadiq was quoted as saying by sources.

On September 10, Islamabad police arrested several prominent leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for allegedly violating standard operating procedures (SOPs) during a rally in Sangjani and for not adhering to the scheduled end time of the event.

The arrests occurred late Monday night, with key figures including PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, Sher Afzal Marwat, Shoaib Shaheen, Zain Qureshi, Sheikh Waqas Akram, and 12 other members taken into custody.

Marwat was detained while leaving a National Assembly session, Shoaib Shaheen was arrested at his home, and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan was apprehended outside the Parliament House in a coordinated effort. Additionally, Marwat’s private security guard was also arrested for allegedly resisting police during the operation. The arrests took place both at the Parliament House gate and within its premises.

Among those detained were PTI MNAs Maulana Naseem Shah, Aamir Dogar, Owais, Ahmad Chattha, Syed Shah Ahad, and Yousuf Khan. Additionally, MNA Zubair Khan, who represents South Waziristan, was arrested shortly after leaving the Parliament House.

In response to the situation, authorities had sealed off Islamabad’s Red Zone, raising concerns that additional PTI leaders might also be apprehended. Police officials indicated that these arrests were connected to an FIR filed in relation to the Sangjani rally. There were expectations of further arrests involving prominent figures such as Omar Ayub and Zartaj Gul.

The charges against the detainees include failure to adhere to rally regulations, confrontations with police, and making anti-state statements during the event.
