Diamer Basha Dam Project to Revolutionize Irrigation and Power Generation in Pakistan

Diamer:-Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) visited the Diamer Basha Dam Project to review construction progress. He emphasized the need to accelerate the pace of work to meet the 2028 completion timeline. The project, which is the highest RCC dam in the world, is being constructed across River Indus, 40 km downstream of Chilas town.

Construction work is underway on 17 key sites, including diversion tunnels, coffer dams, guide wall, dam pit, and permanent bridge. The river diversion system is functioning satisfactorily during the high flow season. The project has a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 MAF, irrigating 1.23 million acres of land, and a power generation capacity of 4,500 MW.

The Chairman also held a Jirga with local elders, discussing confidence-building measures for resettlement, health, education, and infrastructure development. He highlighted WAPDA’s commitment to prioritizing local employment and investing in development schemes.
