Pakistan Poised for Historic Eighth Term on UN Security Council

GENEVA: Pakistan Poised for Historic Eighth Term on UN Security Council. Pakistan is on the brink of a historic achievement as it gears up to be elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for an unprecedented eighth term. The election, which will see competition among Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, is set to fill five non-permanent seats in the 15-member council.

All five contenders have previously served as non-permanent members: Pakistan has held the position seven times, Panama five, Denmark four, Greece twice, and Somalia once. Pakistan’s prospects appear particularly strong, setting the stage for a record-breaking eighth term.

The election process divides the five seats among regional groups: one candidate each from the African Group, Asia-Pacific Group, and Latin American and Caribbean Group, while two seats are allocated to the Western European and Other Group. Each group typically nominates a single consensus candidate, known as a “clean slate.” Pakistan is the candidate from the Asia-Pacific Group.

The newly elected members will assume their roles on January 1, 2025, serving until December 31, 2026.
