Italy Announces 1 Billion Euro AI Investment Fund

Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni unveiled plans for a significant investment in artificial intelligence (AI) projects, totaling one billion euros, during an event in Rome. The announcement comes ahead of a G7 technology ministers meeting where AI is set to be a major focus.

The newly proposed investment fund aims to foster AI development in Italy by providing seed money to attract additional investments. Meloni emphasized the importance of creating “an Italian way to develop AI” through this initiative, which will incorporate both new funds and existing resources.

In addition to the investment fund, Italy is working on its own legislation to complement the EU’s forthcoming AI regulations, aiming to establish ethical principles and support domestic AI companies. Meloni stressed the significance of ethical guidelines in AI development, emphasizing the need to prioritize individuals’ rights and needs.

The rapid advancement of AI technology has raised global concerns, particularly highlighted by the launch of ChatGPT, a generative program developed by Microsoft’s OpenAI. Meloni has emphasized that AI will be a top priority during Italy’s presidency of the G7 this year.

During the upcoming G7 ministers meeting in Verona and Trento, Italy plans to focus on developing ethical frameworks for AI in the public sector. This includes working towards a “toolkit” for ethical and human-centered AI development, as well as establishing mechanisms for voluntary monitoring of AI systems’ adherence to ethical standards.
