96% of polling staff trained for Feb 8 elections

Islamabad(Mudassser Chuhdary)_Election Commission  has successfully trained 96% of the polling staff, encompassing 970,000 out of a total of 976,000 members.

The remaining 6,000 staff members are expected to complete their training within the next four days, ensuring the readiness for the upcoming February 8 general elections.

Preparations for the elections are progressing rapidly, with the printing of ballot papers underway in three government press offices.

This crucial task, initiated on January 16 after the assignment of election symbols by the Returning Officer (RO), is on track to conclude by February 2.

Collaborating with security agencies and District Administration, the ECP has commenced the process of delivering ballot papers to all four provinces, utilizing both road and air transportation methods.

Starting January 29, 2024, the public can use the 8300 SMS service to access information about their polling station and other relevant details.

By sending their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) to 8300, voters can obtain crucial information about their voting details.

The ECP encourages all voters to promptly check these details for themselves and their family members to avoid any complications at the polling station.

In response to clashes and shootings between two political parties in Karachi and the snatching of postal ballots in Swabi district, the commission has initiated an inquiry.

Reports have been requested from the chief secretary and police inspector general to consider possible actions against those involved under election laws.

ECP Declares over 18,000 polling stations to be most sensitive,

In a statement, the ECP said that a total of 90,675 polling stations will be created across the country including 25,320 male and 23,952 female polling stations. Another 41,403 polling stations will be combined.

The polling stations will have a total of 276,398 polling booths including 147,552 male and 128,846 female booths.

The polling stations have also been categorised according to sensitivity. Out of the total 90,675 stations, 27,628 have been declared sensitive while 18,437 have been declared most sensitive,

Issues special guidelines for presiding officers,

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued special guidelines for the presiding and assistant presiding officers for the general elections across the country to be held on February 8.“As per the guidelines the presiding and assistant presiding officers should reach the respective polling stations two hours before polling time,”

He said that the presiding and assistant presiding officers should enter all the information on the ballot paper counters file as per the guidelines issued by the ECP.Apart from this, put the left thumb of men and the right thumb of women on the counters file of the ballot papers and put the official seal with a specific number on the back of the ballot papers, he said. He said that a total of 90,675 polling stations have been established in the country for the general polls out of which 25,320 for men and 23,950 for women while 41,405 will be joint polling stations.
