Winter Causes Dry and Rough Skin, Experts Recommend Simple Remedies
Indoor heating systems and long, hot showers further strip away natural oils, worsening the problem.
ISLAMABAD: As winter approaches, many people begin to notice their skin becoming dry, tight, and rough. Experts say the drop in temperature and humidity during the colder months plays a major role in reducing the skin’s natural moisture.
To understand why this happens, dermatologists explain that the skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, acts as the body’s protective shield. When exposed to cold air and low humidity, the epidermis loses moisture quickly, leading to dryness and flakiness. Indoor heating systems and long, hot showers further strip away natural oils, worsening the problem.

“People often think dry skin is only caused by the weather, but lifestyle habits like overbathing or using very hot water are equally harmful,” experts note.
How to Protect Skin in Winter
Dermatologists suggest a few simple ways to keep skin healthy during the cold season:
-
Use lukewarm water instead of hot water while bathing.
-
Keep showers short to avoid removing the skin’s natural oils.
-
Apply moisturizer immediately after washing to help lock in moisture.
-
Use a humidifier indoors to add moisture to the air and prevent dehydration.
These simple measures can help maintain the skin’s natural softness and prevent roughness.
However, doctors warn that if symptoms such as severe itching, cracks, or bleeding appear, it could be more than just seasonal dryness. In such cases, they advise visiting a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
