WhatsApp to Introduce Username-Based Calls, Reducing Need for Phone Numbers

The username-based system is still under development and is not yet available to beta testers.

ISLAMABAD: WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to make calls without needing phone numbers. According to a report by WABetaInfo, in the near future, WhatsApp users will be able to search for and contact others using usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers.

The feature has been spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android devices. This means users will be able to connect with others without sharing their contact details, enhancing privacy and security. A similar feature is already available in messaging app Signal.

The username-based system is still under development and is not yet available to beta testers. Once implemented, users will be able to search for others through a search bar in the Calls tab. By entering the correct username, they will be able to make voice or video calls, depending on the recipient’s privacy settings. Users may also be able to see the other person’s profile photo before calling, again subject to privacy controls.
