WhatsApp Plans Major Username Feature for Privacy Upgrade

WhatsApp to Introduce Username-Based Messaging System by Mid 2026

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – WhatsApp is preparing to roll out one of its most significant updates in recent years, introducing a username-based communication system aimed at enhancing user privacy.

According to reports, the new feature will allow users to connect through unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers for messaging, voice calls, or video calls. The update is expected to be launched globally around mid-2026, with June being the likely target.

This shift is expected to transform how people use the platform, offering greater control over personal information and reducing the need to share sensitive contact details.

Similar systems are already in place on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, while messaging apps such as Telegram and Signal have long supported username-based interactions.

WhatsApp introduces guest chat for non-users

Reports indicate that the username feature will be optional, allowing users to choose between sharing their phone number or using a unique handle. Availability of usernames will depend on whether they are already taken, and existing contacts will still be able to reach users via phone numbers.

In addition, WhatsApp is testing a “guest chats” feature, which will enable communication with non-users through browser-based links, further expanding the app’s accessibility.
